El Paso (1949) [Bert Donner]: Shot to death in a big shoot-out.

The Asphalt Jungle (1950) [Dix Handley]: Mortally wounded in a shoot-out with Brad Dexter; he dies some time later after finally making it back to his old family home.

So Big (1953) [Pervus DeJong]: Dies of exhaustion/heart failure due to overwork on his farm.

The Last Command (1955) [Jim Bowie]: Presumably killed in battle with Mexican soldiers at the Alamo. (I haven't seen this, but we're all familiar with the history...)

Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) [Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper]: Commits suicide (off-screen) by shooting hismelf in his bathroom; we only hear the shot from the other room while Peter Sellers is attempting to persuade Sterling to give him the recall codes.

The Godfather (1972) [Captain Mark McCluskey]: Shot in the throat, then in the head, by Al Pacino in a restaurant.
